University of California, Davis Aggie Square

Aggie Square is a unique developer-led multi-building expansion of the UC Davis Sacramento campus, home to UC Davis Health. The development incorporates cutting-edge life sciences, technology, and engineering laboratories, classrooms, offices, incubator spaces, and more, set within a vibrant and inviting sub-campus.

The lighting design for Aggie Square required significant cross-disciplinary collaboration to achieve visually clean, open-ceiling public spaces with discreetly integrated, organized luminaires. Decorative accent fixtures are incorporated throughout to introduce vibrancy and intimacy to gathering areas and, in some cases, to add acoustically absorptive surfaces. Laboratories and other areas where visually intensive tasks are performed are equipped with high-performance, low-glare illumination. Exterior gathering spaces are designed with layered pedestrian-scale lighting. Multi-head adjustable light columns are utilized at the central plaza to minimize visual and physical obstructions for special events.

Multiple interdependent buildings and design phases were managed concurrently, representing a monumental design, engineering, and coordination effort. The project delivers ambitious efficiency and sustainability goals that are central to UC Davis culture.
