University of Wisconsin — Madison
School of Veterinary Medicine Addition and Renovation
The University of Wisconsin at Madison’s School of Veterinary Medicine is expanding their educational program with research space, access to large and small animal isolation suites and increased space for specialty services such as imaging, surgery, and oncology. New entries for the Small Animal Hospital will allow improved public access with links to the existing building and adjacent parking ramp, while the exterior plaza and roof terrace provide places of respite for visitors, students, and staff.
Pivotal provided an architecturally integrated and sustainable lighting design approach throughout the exterior and interior spaces. Full cut-off LED luminaires are utilized throughout the exterior landscape to mitigate light spill into the night sky and prevent light spread into the adjacent wildlife corridor. Linear LED fixtures are seamlessly integrated into the roof trellis and canopies, creating a visual connection between multiple exterior levels.
Architectural “nodes” located at primary access points, are reinforced with luminous oval elements visible from the exterior, while providing soft ambient illumination of vertical surface at the interior. To further assist in wayfinding and create a clear definition of space, a color temperature shift occurs between public and private spaces to guide patients and visitors throughout the facility.
