University of Wisconsin — Madison
Wisconsin Institutes for Discovery

Pivotal provided integrated architectural lighting design, daylighting analysis, lighting control system specification, and commissioning for this new interdisciplinary research building. Developed in the early planning phase and continuing through post-occupancy, the foremost project objectives were to emphasize architectural form, aid wayfinding, and reduce energy by 50% per square foot compared to the most recently constructed science building on campus.

Due to the variety of programmed spaces, the lighting design required an adaptable design strategy, featuring layered and flexible lighting for research space, daylighting integration, occupancy sensors, personal controls, light wells in basement offices, and a range of lighting solutions tailored for the ground floor - all supporting over a dozen distinct spaces. Pivotal developed separate daylight analysis and lighting solutions for the multi-story atria on the building's north and south sides. Sophisticated building-wide lighting controls monitor energy usage while providing ease of use for maintenance and operations. These design elements reflect the university's commitment to energy efficiency, functional long-term flexibility, and interdisciplinary collaboration.
