The University of Texas at Austin
Engineering and Education Research Center

This new engineering and research center is a global hub for technology innovation, engineering education, and entrepreneurship. The center's two towers are home to teaching and research laboratories with office space for staff and student government.

At the base of the towers is an atrium accommodating the auditorium, library, café, classrooms, and meeting facilities. Pipe mount theatrical lighting stretches along the atrium’s perimeter and offers ambient illumination and focused accent lighting for special events. Atrium skylights supply views into the towers and interconnecting bridges where indirect lighting brightens adjacent ceilings and featured wood surfaces.

Pivotal designed two lighting schemes adaptable to research and teaching laboratories as well as audiovisual systems. Lab lighting controls encompass dual-level, dimmed, and programmed settings adjustable to space requirements and atrium visibility. A low-voltage lighting system provides programmed and daylight harvesting control throughout the building.

Blending campus standard requirements with this highly designed architectural environment demanded close coordination and interface between the design team and campus facilities. Revit was used to document the project.
