Cincinnati Children’s Hospital
Critical Care Building

The clinical space expansion project at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital represents an exciting step forward and a major investment in the future of this highly respected healthcare institution. Pivotal provided lighting design services for this project, which includes a new state-of-the-art 577-bed clinical tower with intensive care and emergency departments, along with upgrades to the existing hospital buildings and expansion of the surrounding site.

The interior and exterior lighting are carefully designed to support the hospital’s goals of maximizing patient comfort, family experience, and connection to the local community. Soft corners, vibrant colors, and indirect lighting help create a welcoming experience for young patients.

A building-wide, low-voltage lighting control system allows staff and patients to adapt the environment to their needs while providing the capacity to automatically dim public area illumination at night. The automatic dimming of public areas will help to minimize light spills into patient areas, supporting healthy circadian system entrainment. Calming rooftop gardens and soft, low illumination of site features make the new addition a warm and inviting place for patients and their families.
